Advocacy


Correspondence & Advocacy

The Board of Education and its educational partners correspond and meet with key educational leaders and City and Provincial Ministries and authorities to raise awareness about policies and decisions that impact students and learning.  In partnership, they advocate for a first-class public education system for all students and our local communities.

Below is a collection of advocacy letters sent on behalf of the Powell River Board of Education as well a link to the  Advocacy page of the BCSTA.


October 11, 2024

Advocacy for Public Education in the 2024 Provincial Election

Board Chairperson, J. Miller, wrote letters to local candidates in the 2024 Provincial Election to advocate for public education improvements and funding. 


June 22, 2023

Letter in Support of Road Improvements at the Blubber Bay Ferry Terminal

Secretary-Treasurer, Steve Hopkins wrote a letter in support of prospective road improvements at the Blubber Bay Ferry Terminal.


February 16, 2023 

Letter endorsing the Single Mothers' Alliance Transit for Teens Campaign

Board Chairperson, D. Lawson wrote a letter to Transportation & Environment stakeholders, Education & Childcare, Ministry of Children and Family Development . and the Select Standing Committee on Children and Youth endorsing the Single Mothers' Alliance Transit for Teens Campaign.


March 21, 2022 

Community Forest Board/City of Powell River - Multi-Use Path Linking 

Superintendent, Dr. J. Yule wrote a letter to the Community Forest Board, supporting the City of Powell River's application for funding to construct a multi-use path linking Brooks High School and Townsite, within the Recreation Complex and Westview neighborhood.

Rainbow Crosswalk

Chairperson, Ms. D. Lawson wrote a letter to Mr. R. Brewer, Chief Administrative Officer for the City of Powell River, with respect to consideration for a rainbow crosswalk at the intersection of Selkirk/Nootka.

Active Transportation Infrastructure

Superintendent, Dr. J. Yule wrote a letter in support of the City of Powell River's application for  All Ages and Abilities Active Transportation Infrastructure in our Community.

January 14, 2021 - Trades

Chairperson, Ms. D. Lawson wrote a letter to Honourable Whiteside, Minister of Education regarding reinstating funding for trades training program for students under the age of 19.

November 20, 2019 - AllOnBoardCampaign

Chairperson, Ms. A. Reid wrote a letter to Mayor Dave Formosa and Council Members regarding the AllOnBoardCampaign aimed at providing free bus fares in Powell River to children ages 0-18.

Chairperson, Ms. A. Reid wrote a letter regarding the Climate Strike on September 27, 2019.



March 7, 2018 - Letter of Support

Superintendent of Schools J. Yule wrote a letter of support for the City of Powell River's Accessibility Grant application requesting financial support for the installation of an elevator at the Recreation Complex.
